PSHE
Intent
At Bishop Wood C of E Junior School, our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) curriculum is rooted in our Christian vision and values. We aim to nurture confident, respectful and responsible individuals who are well-prepared for life in modern Britain.
Our curriculum is designed to support pupils in developing the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives—now and in the future. Through a progressive programme of study from Year 3 to Year 6, pupils explore key themes including:
- Being Me in My World
- Celebrating Difference
- Dreams and Goals
- Healthy Me
- Relationships
- Changing Me
These areas enable children to understand themselves and others, build positive relationships, celebrate diversity, and develop resilience and aspiration. Pupils are encouraged to reflect on their own identity, understand rights and responsibilities, and recognise how their choices impact others locally and globally.
Implementation
Our PSHE curriculum is delivered through a structured, progressive programme that builds on prior learning each year. Lessons are carefully sequenced to ensure pupils develop both knowledge and essential life skills.
Key features of our implementation include:
- Progressive Learning: Skills such as empathy, decision-making, resilience and self-awareness are revisited and developed across all year groups. For example, pupils move from understanding how behaviour affects others in Year 3 to analysing global responsibility and community impact in Year 6 .
- Active and Engaging Approaches: Learning includes discussion, reflection, role-play and collaborative activities, allowing pupils to explore real-life scenarios and develop critical thinking.
- Real-Life Application: Pupils take part in meaningful experiences such as creating class charters, contributing to whole-school displays (e.g. dreams and goals), and participating in themed projects like “The Happy Healthy Me Recipe Book” and “Relationships Fiesta” .
- Focus on Wellbeing and Safety: Children are taught how to keep themselves physically and emotionally safe, including online safety, understanding risk, and managing peer pressure.
- Inclusive and Values-Based Teaching: Our curriculum promotes respect, equality and diversity, helping pupils understand and challenge discrimination, including bullying and racism.
PSHE is taught both as a discrete subject and woven throughout school life, ensuring that pupils consistently apply their learning in a range of contexts.
Impact
Through our PSHE curriculum, pupils at Bishop Wood C of E Junior School become:
- Confident individuals who recognise their own worth, set goals and face challenges positively
- Responsible citizens who understand rights and responsibilities and contribute positively to their community
- Emotionally literate learners who can manage feelings, build healthy relationships and show empathy towards others
- Safe and informed decision-makers who understand how to keep themselves healthy and safe, including in online environments
- Respectful and inclusive individuals who celebrate diversity and stand against discrimination
By the end of Year 6, pupils are well-prepared for the transition to secondary school. They leave with a strong understanding of themselves, the ability to form positive relationships, and the skills to navigate an increasingly complex world with confidence and compassion.
