History is an extremely important part of the curriculum at Bishop Wood. Through the study of chronology and different historical sources, it allows children to weigh evidence, consider different arguments, develop their perspective and judgement, and compare and contrast different societies and periods of history.
The wisdom acquired in History lessons can help influence pupils’ choices, values and attitudes as they grow up. As well as giving students a sense of their own identity and their place within the local, national and global community, History also helps them understand the diversity of different groups that make up each of those communities. For this reason, our curriculum includes a balance between national history (eg. Local History and Roman Britain) and globally significant societies (eg. The Ancient Greeks and the Ancient Egyptians). This in turn gives them hope that a more tolerant and compassionate society is possible in the future, where all groups within that society are treated with dignity.
