English – Statement of Intent
Through our English curriculum, we aim to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.
Children have the opportunity to communicate through learning partners, groups and whole class discussions. This enables them to build up the confidence and self-respect to make formal presentations, demonstrating to others, participating in debates with dignity and develop a positive attitude to explaining clearly their understanding and ideas. Every year children will develop the habit of reading widely for both pleasure and information using texts from a variety of cultures, which reflects a global community, showing respect and tolerance for cultures different from our own. From Year 3 to Year 6 children will progress their writing skills though using a wider vocabulary, develop grammatical accuracy and be able to apply spelling patterns correctly using a neat handwriting style. We believe this will give our children the wisdom they need to participate fully as a member of a multicultural society.
